John Robinson
Executive Director
As USI’s Executive Director, John is responsible for integrating academic and operational sustainability on UBC’s Vancouver campus. He is a professor in UBC’s Institute for Resources, Environment, and Sustainability and the University’s Department of Geography. John’s research focuses on the intersection of sustainability, social and technological change, behaviour change, and community engagement processes.

John is a Fellow of the Trudeau Foundation, a member of numerous sustainability-related boards, and has been a lead author in the last three reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.

Alberto Cayuela
Associate Director
Alberto works closely with representatives from the Campus Sustainability, Teaching and Learning and Research and Partnerships offices to achieve UBC’s sustainability goals.

A civil engineer and LEED accredited professional, Alberto brings a wealth of experience in sustainable building and renewable energy projects garnered in the private sector, including at his last position as senior project manager with Stantec. He is a co-chair of the Steering Committee of the Metro Vancouver Branch of the Cascadia Chapter of the US/Canadian Green Building Council, and a past president of the Society of Project Management Professionals of Greater Vancouver.  

Ann Campbell
Manager of Communications
Ann is responsible for ensuring the campus community and wider world know about the good work being done in sustainability at UBC. An accomplished writer and facilitator, she works closely with her colleagues across the USI offices and in Public Affairs. Before joining the USI in 2010, Ann was a freelance writer and principal of her own communications consulting firm. Ann earned her Bachelor’s degree from UBC and M. Ed. from the University of Toronto.

Sara Muir-Owen
UBC Pacific Institute for Climate Studies (PICS) Campus Coordinator
Sara coordinates Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions (PICS) activities on campus, in association with USI. Sara has a Masters in Landscape Architecture from UBC and is a member of the Canadian Institute of Planners. Before joining USI, Sara researched sustainable community planning policies and design. She has been involved in numerous municipal planning projects in Canada and the U.S. including the ASLA and CIP award-winning City of North Vancouver 100 Year Sustainability Vision.
