About us

What we do | Who we are | Staff profiles

What We're doing
The Sustainability Office is here to promote, coordinate, and implement the most effective sustainability practices possible. By harnessing UBC's immense physical and intellectual resources, we're working to develop positive solutions for today's ecological challenges.
Annual report

Who we are
In 1997, UBC became Canada's first university to implement a sustainable development policy. A year later, the university opened Canada's first Sustainability Office (SO).

The office is committed to developing an environmentally responsible campus that is economically viable and reflects the values of campus community members. We're assisting UBC in assuming a leadership role through practicing sustainable development and instilling sustainable development values in its graduates and employees through research, teaching, and operations.

The SO is currently facilitating at least a dozen focused programs that aim to reduce energy and resource consumption on campus, encourage the construction of green buildings and involve all members of the campus in this ongoing goal to make the university a fully sustainable community.

The office is completely funded by savings from our energy reduction programs and is made up of four full-time and three part-time staff members; we'd like to introduce them to you.
