Inspirations and Aspirations

The newest edition to the Inspirations and Aspirations set of documents is now available. Inspirations and Aspirations: The Sustainability Strategy AND YOU outlines what individuals on campus can do to make UBC more sustainable.

Also available is the over 60-target Inspirations and Aspirations: The Sustainability Strategy. This initiative unites all of UBC’s faculties and departments under one sustainability strategy built for the entire university. We started this strategy in response to the university’s Sustainable Development Policy. The policy calls for action plans with clear targets in all departments that will improve performance in key sustainability areas.

After making a wholehearted commitment to sustainability in 1997, the University of British Columbia is now an internationally recognized leader in the campus sustainability movement. But what exactly is the university doing at a departmental and grassroots level? What vision does UBC have for the future? And what precisely have the benefits been to date?

The answers lie in the fine print of Inspirations and Aspirations: Sustainability at UBC, a definitive catalogue of the many and varied ways in which sustainability is practiced by students, staff and faculty as they work together to ensure long-term benefits for UBC and the world. The achievements range from dramatic savings in fiscal spending and energy use to equally critical changes in attitudes, policy planning and course curricula. As sustainability becomes increasingly woven into the fabric of life on campus and in society at large, this comprehensive document will inspire and guide those preparing their own action plans.

Sustainability at UBC places a balanced emphasis on People, Place and Process. Guided by Trek 2000, the university's vision statement for the 21st century, UBC is committed to providing a nurturing environment for our People and conserving the natural bounty of our Place, all while following an open and transparent decision-making Process that involves the entire campus population. Sustainability can be said to be functioning at an optimal level when decisions are informed and guided by equal measures of ecology, economy and society.
