EMAN ALSULAITI Undergraduate Student, CENES – Modern European Studies
Eman is a fourth year Central, Eastern, and Northern European Studies student at UBC. Alsulaiti has a keen interest in climate change and social inequality which led her to come first in a Community Engaged Learning project appointed by councillors of the City of Vancouver.
MAX COHEN PhD Candidate, Geography
Max is a PhD student at UBC’s Department of Geography. Cohen’s research includes interviewing Scottish government policymakers, local NGOs, and community stakeholders to evaluate the inclusiveness of the new green jobs and investments and amplify the voices of local communities.
KATHY HARRISON Professor, Department of Political Science
Dr. Harrison studies environmental, climate, and energy policy, federalism, and comparative public policy. Dr. Harrison has authored, edited or co-edited several volumes, including Racing to the Bottom? Provincial Interdependence in the Canadian Federation, and Global Commons, Domestic Decisions: The Comparative Politics of Climate Change.
TEMITOPE ONIFADE PhD Candidate, Peter A. Allard School of Law
Temi has lived and practiced law in the notorious Niger Delta where he learnt about environmental issues, igniting his interest in sustainability. Pursuing this interest, he worked as a partner at Lex Luminaire in Nigeria, leading renewable energy projects and advising clients such as Biofuel Development Farmers Association and Green Energy Plant on low-carbon investment and incentives.
RASHID SUMAILA University Killam Professor and Canada Research Chair in Interdisciplinary Ocean and Fisheries Economics
Dr. Sumaila is the 2017 recipient of the Volvo Environment Prize which is one of the scientific world’s most respected environmental prizes. Dr. Sumaila’s research focuses on bioeconomics, marine ecosystem valuation and the analysis of global issues such as fisheries subsidies, marine protected areas, illegal fishing, climate change, marine plastic pollution, and oil spills.
JUVARYA VELTKAMP Director Canada Climate Law Initiative, Peter A. Allard School of Law
Juvarya brings 22 years of experience, with 16 directly related to climate change, sustainable development and high performance buildings. Prior to joining CCLI, Juvarya provided oversight for the development of low-carbon economy projects and programs for the City of Vancouver, including climate-awareness and corporate education materials to accelerate the adoption of low-carbon solutions and help small- and medium-sized businesses develop climate action plans.
